The Union For Contemporary Art is an arts and culture community facility envisioned and designed by Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture for The Shirley Tyree Theater, with interiors that reflect the organization’s mission of creative expression, inclusion and community engagement. The design embraces a layered color palette that balances warm neutrals with bold accent tones, creating a dynamic yet grounded environment that feels both welcoming and expressive. Texture plays a central role in shaping the experience, from soft textiles and mixed upholstery to smooth architectural surfaces and tactile wall treatments that add visual richness. Thoughtful material transitions and curated details help guide the narrative throughout the facility, reinforcing a cohesive identity while honoring the creative energy central to The Union’s purpose.
Furnishings were selected to support the diverse range of programming and social interaction that define the space, creating environments that are both comfortable and adaptable. Gallery areas, communal gathering zones and flexible event spaces are composed with careful attention to scale, comfort and durability, ensuring each setting feels purposeful and inviting. Hutch Contract partnered closely with Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture to bring the vision to life, sourcing and procuring furniture and accessories that align with the design intent while enhancing the functionality and overall experience of the Union For Contemporary Art as a vibrant cultural hub.
